The Shift from Academics to Life Skills

When a young person with a disability or developmental support need enters their teenage years, their Individualized Education Program (IEP) should begin to transition. While functional academics remain important, the focus shifts heavily toward Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and pre-vocational skills. The goal is to support participation, choice, safety, and as much independence as the young person wants and can sustain as they move into adulthood.

What are Pre-Vocational Skills?

Pre-vocational skills are the foundational abilities required to hold a job or participate meaningfully in a community setting. These include:

• Time Management: Understanding schedules, using alarms, and arriving on time.
• Communication: Asking for help appropriately, following multi-step instructions, and interacting with peers.
• Task Completion: Staying on task without constant supervision and understanding when a job is "done."
• Money Management: Understanding the value of money, making small purchases, and basic budgeting.

How Parents Can Help

You can begin building these skills at home long before your child reaches adulthood. Assign meaningful household chores like sorting laundry, setting the table, or organizing groceries. Break these tasks into visual steps if necessary. Celebrate the completion of the task to build their confidence and intrinsic motivation.

Transition planning should include the young person's own preferences and communication, reasonable accommodations, supported decision-making where appropriate, and realistic opportunities in the local community.
